Mini-Medical Plan
The Absolute Best Limited Benefit, Guaranteed Issue Plan Available
The term mini-medical has no real meaning. You can call any limited health insurance plan a mini medical plan. However, a number of you use this as a search term and we did not want you to miss our website.
However, we strongly suggest you read this chart. You might find it the best consumer guide to limited benefit plans on the Internet.
The basic characteristics of a mini-medical (or limited benefit) plan as follows:
Doctor's Office Visits:
Depending on the plan, you will generally be offered between 4 and 7 visitis per year. The plan reimburses a fixed amount per office visit that is generally between $50 and $100. |
Diagnostic Testing or X-ray:
Medically necessary diagnostic tests and x-rays performed in a doctor's office or outpatient facility. E.g. MRI, CAT Scan, EKG, Mammography is covered with a fixed amount of reimbursement. We have seen this amount vary between $75 and $400 depending on which plan you purchase. |
Preventative Care Benefit:
There are some plans that make you think that a well visit or checkup is being covered. Actually, they are only covering a well-visit lab test. We have switched over to plans that actually cover at least one check up per year and not just the labs.
|
Regular Inpatient Stay:
This is the favorite area of con artists to puff up their benefits.
Most hospital stays are only a few days. In some instances you may be in the hospital for a week to 10 days, but this is very rare. If a plan pays $1,000 a day for 100 days and it advertises itself as having a $100,000 benefit, you need to find another plan or an agent with a little less larceny in their blood. |
ICU/CCU:
An Extra Daily Benefit, paid per day |
Hospital Admission:
An Extra Benefit for the first day admitted in the hospital |
Critical Illness
Some plans offer an extra lump sum payout of anywhere between $2,500 and $10,000 if you are diagnosed with cancer, have a heart attack, kidney failure, etc. |
Surgery:
Inpatient/Outpatient
Some plans pay as a % of Medicare Reimbursement. This is very confusing and it is almost impossible to find out what this amount actually is. In almost all instances, we find the policy holders are disappointed with the amount.
Other plans pay out a fixed flat amount; one for inpatient surgery and a different amount for out-patient surgery. This is easy to understand and a method we prefer. |
Anesthesia Benefit:
As % of surgery benefit, generally 20-25 percent. |
Accident Rider:
Pays for emergency room benefit in the event of an accident or injury. Watch out for this one. Some agents will tell you that you have emergency room coverage and you will think that it is for sickness as well as accidents. It is not. We now sell plans that have a separate sickness benefit for the emergency room.
|
Rx Card:
Every plan has some sort of Rx card. Remember, the expensive brand name drugs are discounted and not offered with a co-pay. |
Plan Network
Most of our plans use the large Multiplan PPO network.
